I have not heard or read anything on this in recent times, but during the early 1990s as I recall, an Australian newspaper published a lengthy article covering the then visits by the Prime Minister of Japan to Washington and then to Canberra, Australia on the way home to Japan. The story claimed that a new agreement was in place for defence cooperation specifically between Japan, the US and Australia much like the Australia, New Zealand and US ANZUS Treaty.
Part of the agreement was the sharing of military bases and joint military exercises .... in recent years the US and Japan have increased their use and location of military assets at military bases in Australia, the F-22 Raptors were recently sent and there were already bombers and other aircraft, ships, personnel in Darwin and other location around Northern Australia. The US of course also has other bases around the Asia Pacific Region.
The article referred to tensions between Japan, China and North Korea that were developing when it was written.
Another part of the agreement provides for relocation of Japanese citizens to the US and Australia if evacuation became necessary.

Re F-35: Australia's first delivery of two F-35 aircraft during 2015 resulted in two flying from the US to the Avalon Airshow near Melbourne, Victoria recently. Obviously they arrived safely and without incident and RAAF senior officers commented that they are very impressed with and pleased with this new addition to Australia's airforce to replace ageing F/A-18 Hornet and for a few decades beyond fly with F/A-18 Super Hornet & Growler aircraft.
These aircraft were grounded on the scheduled return to US day because of severe electrical storms and concerns about lightning strikes .... it was explained that the two RAAF F-35 aircraft are scheduled for installation of equipment being installed in all F-35s that will enable them to fly in lightning conditions.

The biggest problem with the F-35 IS they require 8-10 hours maintained after every flight so to keep a flight of 5 in the air at all times you have at least 20 or more .

I would have thought that was about average.
I think the F-18 needs that many man hours per flight hour. A lot of that maintenance man hours is testing and verification of systems.
