I hope everyone has a happy and healthy New Year. Our Aussie friends have already started and in several hours it will be our turn. It's been fun watching this forum grow with new members, attitudes, and interests. I think that there are only four or five of us from the old forum left and the diversity is excellent. I've enjoyed making new friends and hope to be able to continue to contribute to the forum even if it is in my normal grumpy manner.

And a Happy New Year to you, Denny, and to all the other members of this forum. And as a fellow military retiree, staunchly defend your right to be grumpy!

While we here prepare for the big party - many staff left over from the "end of the world"-party on the 21st - I just wish you all the best for 2013. From some of the messages I read here, I would guess that "Good Health" will be the most important thing for some of you.
For a "New Military" Forum we are a pretty big failure, but for all other aspects, it is a nice place, as long as you don't mention the GW.

Happy New Year to all, and a tall glass of Jameson for each of us. And here is to some of the members we lost last year. (Capt. Bill)

Wait a minute. I knew he was sick but didn't realized he had died. Can anyone fill in the rest of the story? He, above all, would have loved to have been part of this forum and he would have contributed so much.

Some of the people who signed up have joined our FB version, so, while they're still members, they're not on this online version. Any of your army buddies interested?

As it is now, we don't have but a handful with any military background. In my case, it was almost 30 years after I retired before I decided to re-establish a link to my past with the military. I simply didn't have any interest. I imagine most of my old Army buddies are the same as they have all had properous second careers and most have retired. When we correspond, it is mostly about health and old times, not necessarily anything to do with the military. All of us bash Obama and wish for the good old days.
I suspect that, as has been seen in the not too distant past, that if we get current mililtary or recently retired types, they won't last long because we old timers don't have much in common with them. I regret that I don't contribute as much as I'd like to on various topics, but I simply don't have the knowlege or background. All I can offer are opinions and everyone knows what they are! ;D

Most of us learn by studying new topics. For instance, I am interested in doing a living trust and the question of inheritance tax came up. When I entered the topic on the computer, there was a notice off to the side that there were at least four lawyers who were experts in the field that could answer any questions.
As I pursued this avenue, I found they wanted $30 to start. Being a cheap scate I decided to research the topic myself and came up with the correct answers as published by the IRS.
Bottom line, we can all expand our knowledge and gain experience in new fields if we just put in a little effort.

This is just a discussion forum, and some of us were thinking that 20 or so regulars would be the optimum number. No need to be an expert in any subject - I'll give my sage advice on any topic on Earth ... or beyond.

He, above all, would have loved to have been part of this forum and he would have contributed so much. We are only guessing that he has passed on - no confirming messages. He last contacted me by email that he was going into the hospital for tests on something that was going wrong with his kidneys that created an arythma in his heart beat. I wished him well and asked that I be kept advised of his progress. Heard nothing after that so I am assuming the news was not good....

That was the last I heard as well, so it probably came from you at the time. Boy, I sure hope we're wrong because he was really a good person to "talk" to.

I sent an email to everyone on the old place, and he never answered.
You know, those who do their wills should leave a separate set of instructions for their executors as to which forums to go announce their passing away. These instructions would change almost year by year, so they should not be put in the will, but they should be done, for obvious reasons - I'm doing that.
