I highly recommend the book 'Into the Fire' by Dakota Meyer and Bing West.
It is the account of the brave actions of Dakota Meyer, in 2009, who was a Marine who served with distinction in Afghanistan. He saved numerous men and disobeying an order not to go to the assistance of his Advisory Team. The battle was utterly savage with Dakota using .50, SAW and other weapons including a rock, to kill the Taliban that hatched the ambush. He and his driver went through several vehicles as he went back again and again, leaving most of the vehicles so shot up as to be unusable.
Troubled that he survived and the rest of his advisory team were killed, on the day of receiving the MOH he told President Obama that he didn't want the Medal of Honor and didn't consider himself worthy as his team died, despite his Herculian efforts.
I found this book to be a 'page turner' of the first order and highly recommend it. I became aware of the book when Dakota and Byng West were interviewed on MSNBC on the Good Morning Joe show, and saw him appear on other shows, in the fall of 2012.
I have nothing but admiration for this young man, who clearly still suffers from the loss of his team members, as seen in the interviews . Those of us who have been in combat in the military and/or in life and death situations as a first responder will readily understand the trauma he wenth through, including survivors guilt. However this is not the whole story. There was a coverup and then another investigation where senior officers were removed from their commands for the deplorable way they acted and try to coverup things.
The book is published by Random House and the ISBN is:
978-0-8129-9340-0
I have a good library of military books dealing with combat where brave deeds are recounted, however this one stands out and I'm sure those of you who read the book will concur.
