Swampy,
The 11 ships of the 'First Fleet' arrived at Botany Bay (Sydney) on the 26th Jan 1788 after an 8 month voyage from England.
Governor Arthur Phillip took possession of the new land in the name of a bloke called George 3rd, who some Americans may know.
The poms needed the place to dump large numbers of transported convicts, given the fact that a cranky bunch elsewhere had decided to leave the one big happy family that was the British Empire, and go and establish their own.
That SAME DAY a frog eater called La Perouse arrived with a couple of ships, with the intention of taking possession in the name of France. He graciously withdrew when he found he had been beaten to it.
parley vous francais?

Fascinating! I never knew anything about that.
Incidentally, the heat in Australia was one of the leads on the evening national news today.

Actually, mon ami, I do not!
Like most Australians of my ancient era, did a foreign language at High School, and like most Australians of my ancient era, I cannot conduct a conversation in french.
A total waste of lord knows how many class-room hours on a stupid language like french. No wonder they lose every war, they cannot understand each other.
Au revoir, mon ami.
SJ.
