They didn't kick a sleeping dog; they awoke a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve.

never Was Country so pounded as Japan was not in any war to date though if the U.S. was to invade it would have taken a standing Army of 5 million to occupied it .

Operation Olympic would have FAILED, and thus Coronet would have been cancelled!
The Russians would have gone ahead with the deal to attack on the 8th August, and occupied ALL of Japan and Korea!

SJ It would have been tough, but the Japanese could not have held out against the rest of the world. Also, if the Anglo-Americans can't take Japan, how can the Soviet Union. No, I wold say that, with the Soviets attacking in Manchuria, Olympic and Coronet would have succeeded, though at high cost.

Do a good Search on 'Operation Ketsu-Go', and compare the state of play on 1st November 1945.
7000+ Kamikazis, ALL directed on the one day at the troopships, and not the carriers.

I know about their planes, but the Anglo Americans also had lots of planes, as well as supporting destroyers and cruisers. Furthermore, the Japanese pilots were given almost no training - just get released from some bomber, and move the joystick so the plane points towards a target.

Actually 5000 of those 7000 planes were fighter planes and the pilots had much more training than the kamikaze pilots .

All japan needed was to sink maybe 10 or so troops ships all with 5000 troops, and the American public would not have allowed it to continue! There would have been riots in every US city. FAR more impact than 50 planes at a time over 3 months. The defending ships would have run out of ammo. And Kyushu was crawling with japs as they knew that it was the most likely invasion island. It would have been a blood bath! fas.org/irp/eprint/arens/chap4.htmSJ

AND, as an tangental point, I am sure that Truman knew that if he had stopped the 'Manhattan' option and sent the invasion on its way, the grieving Mothers of America would have dragged him out of the White House, and LYNCHED HIM!
Not to mention guaranteeing 2 Presidential terms for General MacArthur, KCMG, VC and 2 bars, 10 DFCs, and 12 DSOs, MOH, from 1948 to 1956.
