Yamashita was a lucky man, he did not have to face Lt General Sir Leslie Morshead - "Ming the Merciless".
When told of a British headline of "Tobruk Can Take It" he replied, "We are not here to take it, we are here to GIVE it!" One and a half Australian Divisions took on Rommel's 4 Africa Corps Divisions and stopped him in his tracks.
"The Australian 9th Division was the finest Infantry Division I ever faced". (Not like those rabble at Kasserine Pass.)
Pity that over-loaded medal poser HRH Sir Douglas MacArthur KCMG, VC and Bar, 15x SS and a DFC, (with 'V' device) 1x MOH, did not have the same attitude.
SJ
PS, Tobruk was the 2nd AIFs first test under fire too!

The 9th was handed a gift called the Italian Army who couldn't surrender fast enough I studied Morshead a bit and it seems he became a very able aide to Big Mac ..
