The British Empire was doomed from 1918 onwards, some knew it, some didn't.
By 1946, it was obvious to all.

The end came when Germany was united in 1871, and also as the US industrialized. But there was never any issue that, when giant nations developed, they would be bigger than a small island nation.

When I was a young lad I well remember standing out on the school ground saluting the Flag and singing the ENGLISH National Anthem.
Then on 'Empire Day' we had a holiday but i cannot remember any ceremonies etc to mark the day, maybe that was for the adults. I will have to ask Mr Google when all that ceased.
