You are right SJ. I was thinking about that, but did not want to alter the story.

"Q1. In which battle did Napoleon die? * his last battle" I wonder if our genius has ever heard of St Helena Island. I would say his last battle was with the death and he lost it.

Matthias,
OT for a moment, but are you aware of a place called Teutoburg Forest (Wald)? Do you live near there and have you ever been there?

SJ, Yes, sure the Teutoburger Wald (Teutoburg forest) is well known in Germany. I've been there and at Kalkriese twice to visit then ongoing excavations for sections of the battleground of the so called Varus battle.

It must have been quite a sight at the time.
The Germans handed the Romans a hiding they would hardly experience again I think. The Germans must have had sore arms after killing 20,000+ Romans in a day or three.

Well, the battle was not one epic battle on one location but drawn out over 40 km. The area were the vanguard went into the trap of course was a major spot of this battle. A British soldiers, who was visiting the site too, told me that most likely the battlefield back then wouldn't have lloked much differently than those in the modern European wars, except that the cause for the death or wounds would have been another weapon type.

I must say Ii have tried to imagine a battlefield, spread over 30 or 40 Kms and littered with (well) over 20,000 dead bodies.
I presume that a spear or a sword run through the chest or guts would be a little painful, and the following few minutes, quite noisy. You would have to go back to the Somme or Verdun to get anything like it.
VALE 17th, 18th and 19th Legions, never after used in the Roman Army.
