I've been wondering about this, because, after tens of millions of years, there would have been no trace. But they still could have existed. I would love to see some real research on this.

No, Don, they didn't leave a trace because of the passage of time. So they were not advanced enough to "not leave a trace", and they were not advanced enough to survive.
