Some politicians want to detain indefinitely American citizens who are considered enemy combatants, but the Senate has voted against an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would allow that. I agree. Citizens who are enemy combatants may be charged with treason and jailed, but, just as German and Japanese POW's are not detained indefinitely, American citizens should also not be detained indefinitely. Of course, so long as they're a threat to the national security, they should be treated as enemy combatants, but indefinite detention is unacceptable.

Are they just laying the legal groundwork for action if things blow up in a year or three?

I guess they try to find a fix again for the problem, that they may know something about a person, which was acquired in a way that is not usable in the courts.
