"Someone told me that while in Viet Nam they purposely got lost in the jungle, ended up shacking with a mama-san and avoided any combat and spent all his time getting stoned. When he decided to come back 6 months later he told them that he had gotten lost in the jungle. He somehow got an honorable discharge and went on to become a very successful and wealthy lawyer."
Well, if somebody told you that story, would you believe such really happened?

No, but I remember that the French Army discharged a number of similar "drifters" during the Indo-China War just to get them out without any further efforts and trails, they were seen as a burden for the troops in any aspect.
