Anyone watching the Benghazi hearing last week with Panetta before the senate has got to be scratching their heads , why was no action taken to come to the aid of 4 Americans , we have a jillion dollar war machine and could do nothing , no one being held accountable , this is all very strange .

Was the Ambassador a Democratic appointment?
(This thread is in the wrong area I think)

Panetta said the military didn't react because it didn't have enough information at the time. But the fog of war is a constant problem, so that's not a real excuse.
I wonder what the REAL reason was.

We'll probably never know. However, I'm inclined to believe the public version that it was not felt necessary to provide additional security in that area. It was a mistake.

First of all, it is not the responsibility of the Defense Department to reinforce an embassy or embassy complex until requested to do so by the State Department. If you have been following this situation you would have read that State turned down multiple requests from Tripoli for more security.
When Hillary was questioned on the security problem, she said she did not know about it. And then “What the Hell difference does it make now?” (the best defense is sometimes an attack)
All this started about 5 PM Washington DC time, and our president quickly excused himself from the matter. He had a campaign speech to prepare.

SEN. GRAHAM: Are you surprised that the president of the United States never called you, Secretary Panetta, and say, ‘how’s it going?’
SEC. PANETTA: I — you know, normally in these situations –
SEN. GRAHAM: Did he know the level of threat that –
SEC. PANETTA: Let — well, let me finish the answer. We were deploying the forces. He knew we were deploying the forces. He was being kept updated
(absolute BS on two counts.)

It is difficult to follow this situation as it has fragmented into a cluster f--k , the state dept . failed to beef up security , the SEAL of course was not a state person and he reacted on his own even though he was instructed to stand down but he reacted as a good American should , Americans were in serious trouble and the thing to do was help them out .

Have you seen the string Benghazi in this forum? I'm wondering if we should merge the two threads.

Australia has not so fond memories of Benghazi.
Britain and OZ took it off the Italians in early 1941, when Herr Rommel arrived and chased them all back to Tobruk. Rommel was stopped at Tobruk by my FIL!!! (with a bit of help from 18,000 mates)
They still call that withdrawal the "Benghazi Handicap".

The Empire has not been kind to OZ , Gallapoli a good example , yet OZ still feels an attachment to Regina .

I'm not an empire fan, but I will accept the good things it has done - unlike the French, Belgians, and Dutch, the Brits accepted the inevitability of the independence of its colonies, and they did impart their tradition of the rule of law to many of those colonies, including Australia, Canada, and Singapore.

Unlike some cranky and argumentative colonies, all that Australia and think Canada, only needed to gain independence was to send the boss a letter.
All done on an agreed date with no unpleasantness!
