I just watched "Downfall", the 2004 German-language movie about the last days of Hitler and his Reich. What stuck out for me was the scene where Himmler thought he could negotiate with Eisenhower, because , according to Himmler, Ike would need "the Nazi state and my SS to maintain order". The historical evidence is clear that he had such ideas, because he went off to negotiate at the last minute, and Hitler fired him for that.
And, speaking of Hitler, he also said that he was fighting the Soviets not just for Germany but also to protect the West. Again, there seems to be evidence that he - and others like General Guderian - were thinking along those lines. No one on our side is going to show gratitude for that act of charity.
But one last thing does ring true - all of them said that, eventually, the truth would come out, meaning that their ideas would see the light again. And, unfortunately, there seems increasing evidence that Hitler is making an iconic comeback, among the neo-nazis and other movements around the world.
So, as always, learning history is important, so as not to forget its lessons.
