Actually the Yanks are quite popular in Darwin. They ahve been rotating regularly over this past 5 years or so and gradually increasing in numbers. I am actually expecting a more permanent arrangement with their own base in the area.
Taken in conjunction with the new joint Australian/American naval base on Manus island, (part of Papua New Guinea) it should end up as a major upgrade of military capacity in the old SWPA of the MacArthur era.
Just a few days ago a Chinese hydrographic ship was spotted near Manus island, supposedly sea floor mapping of the area. You can see why of course!
