I am trying to remember the rifle I used in Vietnam in 1969. I think it was an M16A3, but I am not sure. I cannot even remember if they all or only some of the M-16's had a forward assist. I cannot remember if my M16 did. And if there were both the M16A2 and M16A3's used. Now that I am in NV, where Colt AR-15's can be purchased legally (with NV driver's License)I want to buy a rifle as close as reasonably possible to what I used in Vietnam (except the full automatic, of course). BTW, I already own several AR-15's, one new and never fired ( Colt AR-15 LE6900), and some slightly older ones that have been fired, but none yet from the 1960's era. I think the closest match is a Colt AR15 SP2Or is it? -Don- Reno, NV

When you wrote, "NV", for a moment I thought you were in North Vietnam.

When you wrote, "NV", for a moment I thought you were in North Vietnam. Not possible as today there is a north Vietnam, but no North Vietnam. Notice the "north" and "North". -Don- Reno, Nevada

Unfortunately, that's true.

Unfortunately, that's true. Unfortunately? You think the average Vietnamese person is any more unhappy with their government than those there in Canada or those here in the USA? I really don't know, but I kinda doubt it. -Don- Reno, NV

I didn't see many Canadians leaving their country in rickety boats..... Just after the war was over, I would not blame them for leaving at the first chance they got. But I am talking about these days, not their history. There were times when many felt it would have been a good idea to leave the USA. And many did--as you know--went to Canada to avoid what was going on here--the Vietnam draft. Also, more recently, many have left Canada . . . -to go back to Hong Kong. -Don- Reno, NV

I will not comment on the character of those Americans who went to Canada in those times.....
Wonder how many of today's Vietnamese would turn down a trip to the US with an offer to become a US citizen? Maybe the number of folks crossing the southern border would be an indicator....

Why not compare Vietnam to Mexico? I think the number of Mexicans coming across our border can show how bad it is in some so-called "free" non-commie countries. -Don- Reno, NV

Those Americans leaving the US for Canada were in VERY different circumstances than those leaving a communist-occupied VN. Those in VN were subject to concentration camps and other communist brutalities.

Don loves the Vietnamese and their form of government....No one can talk him out of how great it is to live and work in Vietnam and how miserable Americans are.... I don't "love" or hate it. But there are many non-commie countries where things are much worse than in Vietnam today. About South Vietnam going commie in the beginning. . . Yes, things were very bad and not many would then want to live there. However, I also would not want to live in Russia right after they stopped being commie. Big changes too fast cause problems in either direction. I remember many in Russia who were complaining how bad their new non-commie system was. Any change anywhere that is too fast causes many complaints and problems. Even stuff like Social Security at first in the USA--or today's Obama Care. Few wish to give the time necessary for things to work out. -Don- Reno, NV

The AR-16 was a piece of shit easy and cheap to produced it had very limited range but it was lite and could be easily be broken down for cleaning in no way could it compete with the AK-47 nor did we have anything to compare with the RPG-7-9 .

The AR-16 was a piece of shit easy and cheap to produced it had very limited range but it was lite and could be easily be broken down for cleaning in no way could it compete with the AK-47 nor did we have anything to compare with the RPG-7-9 . Regardless, I would rather carry the AR-15 / M-16 for defense in Vietnam. How about you? BTW, I just picked up another AR-15 today. An AR-15 SP1. From Cabela's. Well used. I took it apart and it really needs cleaning. But it looks like it's in very good condition otherwise. But for now, I just put it back together. I will clean it later. And then I will fire it out in the desert--and adjust the sight and such. They had a 10% off sale at Cabela's today on all used rifles. Including the NV State tax ($83.43) and background check ($26.93), I paid $1,188.42 for this rifle today. NV background checks cost $25.00, but they even charge sales tax of $1.93 on that! Taxes here are getting almost as bad as in Canada! But I will take the CCW class on December 6. After I get my NV CCW permit, I will no longer have to pay for the background checks. BTW, I find it interesting that both Tom & I got VERY interested in guns as soon as we "moved" to Nevada as our primary residence and each got a NV driver's license. In CA, we just don't like to deal with all the BS when it comes to guns. BTW, next I will be collecting rifles used by North Vietnam. AK47 (in simi auto versions, of course)and the SKS. BTW, procession of any of my many AR-15's or an AK47 is a serious felony in California. But the SKS is legal there. California has bans on rifles that look scary. Has nothing to do with what these rifles can do. -Don- Reno, NV
