Ground troops main job is to occupie territory in a missal war they won't be of much use and in a nuke war they won't be any use at all .

As Mule says...for what? The goal will be to destroy. There will be little left to occupy.

I've been wondering about this - the North Koreans have been getting more and more bellicose, so I'm wondering if they really are going to go to war. Are they that stupid?

The neoconservative in me is hoping they'll attack, so we can liberate the north.

If Chinese troops at the border are there just for show, so are our B2s and F-22s. The reliability of the F-22 leaves much to be desired and we have precious few B2s in our arsenal. Any real work would still be done with the old work horse, the B58.
Also, I think Mac has it right. The next step by NK will be a sea hijack for ransom.

I don't think S.Korea would like to see a free North , the South would have a welfare state on their hands . Much like when the wall came down in Germany .

US missiles might take away NK's possibilities to attack with missiles, but when it comes to occupation of the country you need boots on the ground. Even if the regime would collapse after some attacks, the people in NK are isolated for 60 years, their knowledge how to self-organise a new government is very limited to what some old people are telling, so chances are good that they would elect a new dictator as we have seen in some African countries in similar situation even after shorter periods of isloation.

Yes, they would elect whomever gives the free candy. We have the same situation over here.

I suspect that China is trying to show NK that it would be prudent for them to back off because if a shooting war begins that draws in the US, China probably will get involved, something they want to avoid at all costs.

Even though we now have the capability to fight a "star wars" type of war, does not mean that all future wars will be of the star wars kind. There is still the possibility of fighting an outmoded WWII type of war, which I can see the Chinese doing if they want/need to reign in North Korea. They would probably want to control Kim baby without destroying the country. Marching a couple of divisions toward his palace should do it just fine....

You got it right, Jerry. It's the same argument as using the air force - even if you control the skies or space, you will still need boots to occupy the country. And, of course we've been fighting WWII wars ever since 9/11. In fact, the one before that, to liberate Kuwait, was a WWII type war.

Boots on the ground are already in place if needed the S.Korean Army is ready and I could say willing to stomp on N.Korea plus the U.S. has 26,000 of various skilled troops avaliable , the only preson I have noticed that is unaware of the issue is Mr.Obama who spends most of his time and our money doing fund raisers
