Even as the BRICS slow down, other countries are rising, even those in Africa. If this continues, that will be good for the world, and, in a generation, we will defeat the scourge of poverty.

The only way to defeat the scourge of poverty is to require everyone work for their income....

Swampy,
I simply cannot see a bunch of about 50 countries. most with a GDP of about $1.95 ever getting anywhere before they all starve to death or kill each other in their never ending civil wars.
Yes they work cheap, probably a lot cheaper than a Chinese grandmother sewing shirts in the back room, if she HAS a back room, most do not seem to.
A fair % of Africans cannot read and write, or add a couple of numbers. All they can do is fire an AK47.
Africa will NEVER catch up to the industrialised world, not in our lifetime anyway. Looking for salvation anywhere but where the problem lies, is futile.

To succeed, more value must go out than go in ... no point paying people to do useless work. That's as true now as when we were in living in caves.

No - I mean stop paying them for doing nothing.... Or worse - paying them more for producing illegitimate kids... Sounds good to me, if they can be assigned a job for their money. The rest can pick their own jobs.
IOW, let's only be half-commies. ;D

-Don- Reno, NV I think you have that bass ackwards, Don. It was the commies who said "From each according to their ability and to each according to their need". In other words, if you can't do anything we'll take care of you. and a surprising number of people these days have determined that they can't do anything. (47% of US households receive some form of government support)

Commies? Who're they? Oh, yes, those people whose ideas collapsed when the Berlin Wall fell - kinda archaic these days.

"Commies? Who're they? Oh, yes, those people whose ideas collapsed when the Berlin Wall fell - kinda archaic these days."
Like the wise man said, "once a communist, ALWAYS a communist". My own brother lived and died a communist.
In Russia all of the people at the top of the heap are all 'EX' communists. They do not say it, and swear they are not, but they ARE!
All here know that communism/socialism is stronger today in America, than ever before. It is so in most countries in the 'capitalist free enterprise' west. The EU is riddled with elected socialist governments, ALL unsuccessful! In fact socialist programs are the very reason for the disaster that faces us all.
......And these socialists get ELECTED!!
In 1917, Lenin knew that the key to converting the west to socialism and communism lay in the schools and universities. It is a self perpetuating program of brain washing from school to teaching courses and back to the classroom again. Be assured, there is a new generation of communists on it's way to a Congress near you.
Our own PM is in fact an 'EX' communist, who came to influence in her first task at the 'Socialist Forum', that of quietly moving ex members of the Communist Party of Australia from the defunct group to the Australian Labor Party. She is now in power, but certain to be thrown out in September. Her tenure has been a disaster.
Our unions, as are most around the world all communist. Our Electrical Trades Union has a bust of Lenin it its public foyer, or at least it did 20 years ago when I went in there one day. Our teachers unions, notorious for its radical views demonstrates in the streets in a sea of red t shirts and red flags.

Would you mind explaining that? I would seriously doubt that many people in the states would agree with your perception, certainly not with the definition of Communism/Socialism as we know it, or knew it in the past. Too many people died fighting it to just accept a simple statement.

Denny,
I will deal with the concept of socialism first as it is supposedly the milder form of the 'left'. As I would suspect, great men such as Thomas Jefferson and friends would say, unemployment payments, pensions, and 'free' this and 'free' that, are all socialist, though I doubt he knew the word. I am sure he would have opposed it.
Not to forget 47 million people on 'Food Stamps'!! Especially never ending benefits such as the above are all the path of socialism to a world drowning in debt, as there is NO such thing as "free", nor can you make everyone 'equal'.
It is no different in America to what it is in almost every country on the planet, the people EXPECT it, and consider it a right. And as Mitt Romney unwisely pointed out, a big part of the US population is on the public teat to at least some degree, and many to total degree. Australia is the same!
President Obama was re-elected on a guarantee of ever more socialist policies. And these are getting to the stage that they are impossible to roll back, for people that use the vote as a weapon.
And in my humble opinion it is but a short step from socialism to communism, especially after 'the people' are 100% dependent on that public teat.
As the wise man said, scratch a socialist deep enough and you will find a communist underneath.

PS,
I think that people giving their lives to fight communism were probably fighting the 'totalitarianism' and 'dictatorship' of it. Not so much the economic concept of free pensions etc. They knew votes counted for nothing in China, Russia, Hungary, all of eastern Europe etc, then.
Again, JMO
