Chain saws would not have been practable not from the noise aspect since Americans made plenty of noise when on the move but chain saw blades would have dulled in a minute or two from that jungle crap and there was no way to sharpen them , though I would think they might be used when setting up a base camp .

Yes the machete was the weapon of choice as I mentioned earlier , three minutes was about all anyone could stand before passing it to the next happy camper .

I did not think American patrols went via the bush, They had a convoy of support vehicles plus a brass band at each end playing the National anthem in front and New Orleans jazz at the other.

In the area that my unit operated , loosely say from Saigon too the Cambodian border there was a variety of terrain lowlands of rice paddies forest , wetlands a lot of waterways not so much jungle as where Don was in the Central Highlands , mechanized units to some degree could operate and helicopter's could better be used , but go say 100 kms west north west of the delta south of Saigon to the area that Katum was located trees grew a hundred feet high or higher , and moving an American Army from A-Z was anything but quiet , quiet came at night .
